IBM’s senior vice president for Cloud and Cognitive Software Arvind Krishna to replace current CEO Virginia “Ginni” Rometty. The IBM Board of Directors elected Arvind Krishna as Chief Executive Officer of the company, effective April 6, 2020.

Rometty’s tenure as IBM’s CEO has been marked by noteworthy awards, including by Bloomberg’s 50 Most Influential People in the World, Fortune’s50 Most Powerful Women in Business”, Time’s 20 Most Important People in Tech and ForbesAmerica’s Top 50 Women In Tech.

Arvind Krishna, 57, spearheaded IBM’s acquisition of Red Hat — a $34 billion deal — IBM’s biggest purchase in its 108-year history. He currently leads the IBM business unit that provides the cloud and data platform.

Krishna is a veteran IBM executive with nearly three decades of experience at the company. He joined IBM at the end of 1990, which was the same year he earned his Ph.D., according to his LinkedIn profile — indicating that he’s spent his entire career at IBM, in fact. His roles have spanned from working on the Watson research team to serving as general manager and senior vice president of numerous businesses within the past decade, the profile shows.
