Creating Meaningful Roles for the Jobs of Tomorrow

The future of work will continue to change at a rapid pace but it is important that we examine what impact automation has on jobs and identify how future generations can capitalize on their strengths in order to thrive in an increasingly automated workplace. McKinsey research shows that about 50 percent of tasks are automatable with the technology available today. As this technology continues to develop at an accelerated pace, cognitive abilities and tasks that were once thought to be reserved for humans now are increasingly being carried out by machines. This is causing a growing concern about the impact on jobs and the subsequent risks for government, business, and people.

Every day we see more jobs being automated by technology. There are both positives and negatives about this shift — while there are some benefits like increased efficiency or decreased costs, there is also fear of the downside, that robots may replace human labor altogether which some think could lead to unemployment.

When future generations ask what it was like to work in the past many of us will say that we had meaningful roles, but that we largely had to complete our work tasks manually. This doesn’t mean the workforce will no longer have meaningful roles, it will likely be that…
